Is Medical Cannabis Legal in Maryland?

Short answer: Yes. Maryland legalized medical marijuana for patients with certain qualifying medical conditions and for those currently in hospice within the state.

It is no wonder there is so much confusion on this topic for Maryland residents - the medical marijuana program legislation began in 2012, however, stalled out for more than 5 years of delays. It wasn't until December of 2017 that sales actually began.

Now that Maryland residents are able to register and purchase medical cannabis, it's time to inform the community on how to go about that process. It's important to educate and inform because there are still many Maryland residents who are unaware of the medical marijuana program.

Here's a direct quote from the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission:
Qualifying medical conditions include cachexia, anorexia, wasting syndrome, severe or chronic pain, severe nausea, seizures, severe or persistent muscle spasms, glaucoma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or another chronic medical condition which is severe and for which other treatments have been ineffectivesource

These steps will save you the hassle of waiting on a backlog for weeks only to find you need to correct your registration and resubmit, extending the wait further.

If you are an adult (18+), a Minor (17-), or Caregiver - please educate yourself on the necessary steps, documents required, fees, and notarized forms are required to ensure a smooth registration. I will break down steps for each below.

Click link above to see a quick reference PDF provided by MMCC. *IMPORTANT: If you fail to submit all requirements during registration then you must correct and resubmit which incurs additional waiting period. AS OF WRITING, the current approximated time to receive approval is ~45 days, according to the MMCC website. You will need a state issued I.D., a valid email address, last 4 digits of your Social Security #, and of course, $50 for registration fee.

Remember that a bona-fide provider-patient relationship is required. As stated 'what is a a bona-fide provider-patient relationship?' According to the state website:  "​Maryland law defines this term. Essentially it is a treatment or counseling relationship between a provider and patient in which the provider reviews the patient's relevant medical records, completes an in-person assessment of the patient's medical history and current medical condition, creates and maintains medically standardized records, expects to monitor patient program, and takes any medically indicated action to follow up.​"
